Mable, Hireup, or Agency? Finding Your First Client as a Support Worker
Now that we have our Certificate III and our safety gear ready, there is one big question. Where should we actually look for our first shift or client? In Australia, there are three main ways to work as an NDIS support worker.
When I first started looking, I was a bit confused by all the different options. Should I join an agency, or should I work for myself using an app? Each choice has different pay rates, rules, and levels of support for the worker.
In this post, I will explain the differences between Agencies, Mable, and Hireup. I want to help you decide which one is the best fit for your lifestyle. Let’s find the right path so you can start making a difference as soon as possible!
1. Working for a Traditional Disability Agency
Working for an agency is often the easiest way for a new beginner to start. The agency acts as your employer, which means they find the clients for you. They handle the matching process, so you don't have to market yourself to strangers.
One of the best parts about an agency is that you are usually a casual employee. This means they pay for your WorkCover insurance and your superannuation (Super). You don't have to worry about complicated taxes or buying your own insurance.
However, agencies usually take a larger cut of the NDIS funding for their costs. Your hourly pay might be lower than if you worked independently on an app. But for many people, the extra support and steady shifts are worth the lower rate.
2. Being Your Own Boss on Mable (ABN)
Mable is a popular platform where you work as an independent contractor using an ABN. On Mable, you can set your own hourly rates and choose exactly who you work with. This often results in much higher take-home pay compared to an agency.
But being an independent worker comes with a lot more responsibility. You have to manage your own tax, and you don't get paid superannuation by the app. You are also responsible for your own professional boundaries and safety checks.
Mable is great if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and want full control. It feels like running a small business where you are the only employee. If you want the highest pay per hour, this is usually the platform people choose.
3. Hireup: The Middle Ground Option
Hireup is a bit like a mix between an agency and a platform like Mable. You use an app to find clients, but Hireup is actually your legal employer. This means they take care of your tax, insurance, and superannuation for you.
Many workers love Hireup because it feels safer than being totally independent. You get the freedom to choose your clients, but you have a big company backing you up. The pay is usually higher than a traditional agency but lower than Mable.
If you want a balance of "freedom" and "security," Hireup is a fantastic choice. It is very popular among students and people who are new to the NDIS system. It is a "hassle-free" way to start building your own list of regular clients.
4. Which One Should You Choose?
There is no "perfect" answer because every support worker has different needs. If you are nervous and want someone to guide you, start with a local agency. They provide training and a manager who can help you if something goes wrong.
If you are confident and want to earn the most money, give Mable a try. Just remember to save some money for your tax bill at the end of the year! And if you want a simple, app-based job with insurance included, look at Hireup.
Personally, I think it’s a good idea to sign up for more than one option. This way, you can see which one gives you the best shifts and the best clients. The NDIS market is very busy, so there is plenty of work for everyone.
5. Final Advice for Your Job Hunt
No matter which path you choose, remember that you are providing a vital service. Your personality and your care are what clients value the most in a worker. Don't be afraid to apply for a few different roles to see what feels right.
Take your time to read the contracts and understand the pay rates clearly. You have worked hard for your qualification, so you deserve a great workplace. I am excited to see where we all end up in this amazing industry!
